Cage fish farming

Cage aquaculture involves the growing of fishes in existing water resources. While being enclosed in a net cage, which allows free flow of water. It is an aquaculture production system made of a floating frame, net materials, and a mooring system (with rope, buoy, anchor). With a round or square shape floating net to hold and culture a large number of fishes and can be installed in reservoir, river, lake or sea. Since the investment is low and requires very little / no land area, this farming method is ideal for small scale fisher folks as an alternative income source. It can be taken up as a household/women activity since the labour involved is minimal and can be managed by a small family. The design of the cage and its accessories can be tailor-made by the individual farmer’s requirements. A production of 20-40kg/m3 can be achieved in normal conditions from cages. KVK ‘s intervention on using cage farming for rearing fishes inferred that the technology increased the survival percentage from 70 % to 99.15%. The production rate increased by 93 %. The Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) is 1.93:1 as compared to 2: 1 in the normal rearing method
